Five days to go and with any well planned road trip, the first thing to do is get the first couple of days sorted. In this case it is all about working out how far I want to drive in a day, what there is likely to see and finally what hotels are in the area.
The first thing is the route, well I know I want to go to Scotland so it is up the A1, across the A66 and then up the M6 and then I will be going past Glasgow and onwards. I expect the first day will be at least 5 hours of actual driving which may sound horrendous to some people but for me it is heaven, I love driving.
Hazy picture fades into a past memory, I love driving so much so that I have done a few road trips, each one around the 5,000 mile mark over a two to three week period. Driving in unknown remote places is like a dream come true. Hazy picture fades back to reality.
So this time, the hotel is booked for a place called Dalmally which seems a small place not too far from Oban and what seems like a good stopping point before visiting Oban and seeing what that well heard of town has to offer. That is about as far as I want to book and in the past that would be a slight cause for anxiety as it can be that hotels and bed and breakfasts could be booked up, but with the invention of Airbnb then it has opened up a lot more options for staying the night. I am not saying everyone of them will be perfect but it is somewhere to lay your head should you find at a loss and you never know you may find a gold mine.
I have only stayed in a couple of Airbnb’s so far in my travel life but will not that each one has been hosted by very nice people who really do their best at the hosting game and go above and beyond paid hotel staff, who are doing this just for a job. I know I am generalising and appreciate there are exceptions, but I hope you know what I mean. Still this trip may be different, we shall have to wait and see.
Before any long trip one job that I will do before heading out is check the car, oil, water and make sure the tyres have a breath of wind and ensure the dash cam is operational and recording at its peak performance, basic stuff but one that is done you do have peace of mind that the basics are covered.
With five days to go, excitement is building.
