Once again I lost a day, Day 57 did come and go but by the time I got home after the multitude of road closures due to accidents, security scares and the diverted plane to Stanstead and even the incident with the BA jet at Heathrow going to Sweden way all seemed to have an impact in stopping me getting home on Friday night. So much so that my plan to be home early and scare the family was lost and it ended up taking me over four hours to drive the 90 or so miles from Birmingham to home. Needless to say, but I am going to say it, I was shattered and didn’t bother writing up the blog. Lazy, lack of commitment, I know but there you go.
So Day 58 and it is back at Dunkirk for the second week running and there seems to have been a change since Friday morning when I left, the town has gone culture crazy, apparently Dunkirk is the city of culture, firstly it is a town and secondly I am not sure if it is city of culture for the country or for Europe or the world but anyhow stuff seems to be happening. There are little white tents along the dock walls, unless there have been lots of murders and the forensics are at work. But also there are quite a few large sailing ships in, the type that look like pirate boats, maybe thats it, pirates have struck and there have been a number of souls sent to Davy Crockets locker. I haven’t seen the town centre yet as I came straight to the hotel as I had a fair bit of work to do and that is after all why I am here. But maybe I can get a chance to walk out tomorrow and see what is happening out there.
One good thing about this week, other than the last in Dunkirk for a while is that with Monday off and yes I actually had a bank holiday off, and travel on Tuesday it means my first day in the office is also my second to last for the week.
On a different track, today I have to announce a Mal’s Travel award and that has to go to Manchester Airport Terminal 1. You see up to now I have travelled from Terminal 3 and it is quite nice, easy to negotiate and quick to get through, very well run, but Brussels Airlines have now moved to Terminal 1 (the fools). The people who built Terminal 1 want, quite frankly, locking up with mental issues. Before I continue my rant I will say that once you get to check in it is excellent, the security is very fast, the shops in the terminal are, well, shops and there is a nice bit of seating to position ones bum. But before you get to any of that you have to get to check in and the numpties decided that check in would be on the fifth level and then put no escalator or sign to the stairs and make everyone queue for lifts. The lifts then service quite a few floors and it takes about 5 minutes for the lift to go up from ground to check in and other floors and back again, as you can imagine in a morning the queues are ridiculous and then people get arsy and try to push in and other people get arsyier and push back, I wonder how many fights there have there. This one bloke asked a local worker if there were stairs and he thought about it and said, don’t know of any, I think the lift is the only way up, I don’t believe that but I couldn’t risk losing my place in the suitcase scrum so I held on for dear life and after over 10 minutes of waiting for a lift I crammed in , some poor three year old was almost killed under the wheelie suitcase mob but there are always casualties when you go travelling. So my award goes to the people who designed the building or the people who decided you are not allowed to know where the stairs are.
But I am not going to stress too long about that as it is my last time at Manchester for a while as I have booked flights through June and go from places as wonderful as Brimingham and Leeds/Bradford.
On the car front I have a Peugot 5008 and amazing since this is one of the few weeks I have been on my own I am given a bus to drive. But I am not moaning really as the driver is brilliant, really comfortable on the way from Brussels Airport to Grande Synthe and then to Dunkirk. Auto headlights, auto wiper blades, auto reversing sensors and camera. Not that much for me to do really, just point it in the right direction.
With more work to do I will say that is all for tonight, so its
Night All
