Monday morning means up early and out and after last week’s journey in the fog and this week’s forecast of snow I decided to set off early to give myself plenty of time, so it was up at 04:00 and off at 05:00. The snow was not as bad as i feared but with the traffic and a quick stop at a McDonalds to get a coffee I did not arrive at the airport car parking until 08:00 and that mean I got to the terminal courtesy of the airport parking bus service at 08:30. Check in and the security was really slow so I was not through to the departure lounge until past 09:00. It was soon 09:40 and the gate number was announced and I, along with my fellow passengers made our way to gate 49. But when we got there, there was something missing, I couldn’t put my finger on it at first but then it noticed. There was no plane at the gate. So they had rounded us all up and sat us down waiting to board with no planed in sight. One brave soul asked the lady at the gate and got the response, it should be on its way. This show of confidence left us all wondering if we were going to get there as the forecast was now saying that northern France was getting quite a beating from the weather it was quite worrying.
Eventually and only 15 minutes late the plane arrived, we were boarded and I did the usual and was falling asleep as the plane thundered down the runway.
After collected the car, a V W Golf this week, I was on my way to Dunkirk and no sooner was I on my way then the snow started and really came down, luckily the motorway kept clear but every electric sign I passed said “Glad Degweg”, no idea what that means but I was not glad about anything, the further my journey got toward France the more snow came and the more impassable the third lane was getting and like anywhere in the world, every so often some lunatic would fly past at god knows what speed through the snow blocked lane. I could not believe I did not see an accident along the way. I was please just less than two hours later when I arrived at the hotel and could dump the car until morning.
I did some work and then decided at 17:00 to have a walk and by now there was quite a bit of snow around and still belting down. But it was a pleasant walk and managed to find a supermarket so I got some bread, cheese, solami, milk and some coke that will keep me going for the week. I also got some water that will last me for a day or so. As the light started to fade the snow came down even faster (starts like a great start to a book) and it would be dreadful if I was snowed in and couldn’t go to work after coming this far already, really dreadful.
One bad part about the hotel was the room, last week I got room 7 and it has no view, crap internet reception if any at all, but at least I thought I will be in a different room this week. But no, when I got here the wonderful lady said, we have room 7 available for you. I thought NOOOOOOOOOOO, but here I sit in my room 7 with no internet and making do watching old programs on my laptop, but at least I get plenty of time to write the blog, read, re read and now your thinking, hang on, if he read and then re read how come there are still spelling mistakes. The mysteries of life eh.
