Day 22 - Dunkirk - Reality Check

This evening has been a bit of a sobering one.  I had some dinner in my room after getting back from work just after 7.00 p.m. On our way back from work my colleagues and I agreed that we would meet at 8.00 p.m. and have a walk around the town centre.  The light nights have made it pleasant to have a look around the town and whilst it is still quite cold we went for it
The town centre is very nice and has a council building that displays its history from around the 12th centaury and it was interesting to see how this building had gone from being a hotel housing Kings and important people through the ages to being blow up in the 16th century.  It was also a hotel in 1940 when it was again virtually destroyed during the war when the Germans moved into the town.  Then a little further down the road is a big church and we had a walk towards that.  What we found was quite shocking; as you walk around the church you can see bullet holes around the building.  Then on one wall there were hundreds of bullet holes, mostly between four and six feet from the ground.  It is clear the bullet holes have been there for many years and I would imagine from the war.  The grouping and the number shows that at some time guns have been fired against the wall and there is most likely an awful story behind it.
It was very interesting if not sobering. We concluded our walk through the quiet streets and returned to the hotel to sit in the lounge to watch the football.
Tomorrow we have a little time before going for the plane so we are planning to journey back via Brugge where I have been before with Jonathan but not for a little while so it will be nice to look around again.
That is all for tonight, night all
