Day 51 - Ostrava - A look back at a nice city

My last full day in Ostrava and a time to look back at the city.  First of all it is a really nice place, you could be mistaken as assuming it is an industrial town and not the tourist attraction such as Prague but you get a pleasant surprise when you do enter the city.  It does have industrial roots but this has been used to the city’s advantage with a number of museums including a mining and steel museum built on an old mine and steel works.  I didn’t have time to look around either but the information I have read did make me wish I could have some time to see them and maybe when I come back at a later date I will.
The centre is full of very impressive shops built in new shopping centres or in quant squares.  The history of the city and country is interesting to find out about but when you consider the progress made since the country’s independence it is quite staggering.  The road infrastructure is as good as you will find anywhere in Western Europe and the attitude of the local people is very friendly.
If there is a negative side it is the roads where the concept of pedestrian crossings and speed limits don’t mean the same as one from the UK would think of them to mean.  But you can soon get used to that.
I will have to come back at a later stage of the project and will be happy to and without the pre conceived idea that the country is eastern bloc, with a high crime rate and a place to keep ones wits about them.  In contrast it has a very low crime rate and is a progressive pleasant city.  With Ryanair set to start flights during June direct to Ostrava I am sure this areas tourism will really take off and I think it deserves to.
So tomorrow it will be off to Prague early to get the squeezy jet flight back to blighty and although I will have a day of work on Friday it will seem like a long weekend before back to France next week.
So for now
Night All
