Day 14 - Home to London - Happy Drivers

This journey has been all about choices, which believe it or not is quite unusual, past trips have been regiment and nothing between them but this one was different.  Firstly my main choice of train was full so it was about finding the next best and do I go a little later to take advantage of a cheaper fare or virtually the same time which for some reason for a lot dearer than my normal train.  I chose the later train which meant I didnt get into London until 10:00 a.m.  But that meant I had a choice of local train from Goole to Doncaster.  I could take the 06:47 or the 07:17.  The first would give me plenty of time for coffee but mean I leave home some 25 minutes earlier.  Or as what I decided upon I took the later train and then it was, do I have time for coffee before the train to London, and by that I meant do I have time to get the coffee, let it cool a little and consume it before boarding.  I am not one of these people that likes to rush on a train trying to balance a suitcase, bag and coffee cup in my hands as I navigate my way past my fellow traveller.  But then there was the weather, do I take my big thick coat or just go in my suit jacket.  For this I decided as it was only 3 degrees C when I set off to take the big coat but by Doncaster it was warming up nicely and in London I was regretting the
decision.  It was all decision, decision, decision.

At Doncaster as I melted away on the platform I waited for the train and finally it pulled into platform 1.  The main concern when I saw the train was for the driver.  As the train trundled its way down the platform edge the driver was sat with a big grin on his face and waving as he went past.  This was dreadful, the guy was obviously unnaturally happy in his work and I thought if this was the driver how happy would the conductor be and then I was worried, I could imagine some grand central train employee firing up sing alongs in the carrages and by the time we arrive in London most probably have gone through the whole catalogue of pearly kings and queens songs. But no such fear or at least not for me as I put my earphones on and enjoyed my own king of music before arriving in London on a bright and sunny day.  And that is about all I can say.  I arrived at work just after 10:00 a.m. and at 9.15 p.m. I was leaving work.  Between that time I had seen out of the window a beautiful London day but I could take no part in it.

I walked from work and arrived at my room with enough time to throw my bags into the room and join two of my colleagues at dinner.  One result of all that is that I may sleep well tonight before getting up at 6.00 p.m. and doing it all again.

I will say this again but tomorrow I really want to get out and see some of this city I have been coming to for the past few months.  When you consider I have only been out two nights since starting here in January it is a shame and a waste of an opportunity.

But as I am now shattered, night all.
