Day 17 - London - Listening In.

Day 17

I must start by stating that Day 16 was lost as it was one of those ridiculously busy days and by the time I got home I was shattered and just didn’t get the time to start typing it all down.  So I bailed out like a failure and left the week behind and started the weekend as soon as I could.
Back on the road this morning and it is amazing how entertaining a train journey can be, like this morning, just sat in my seat and you can pick up conversations for people nearby.  Today I spent a very interested 30 minutes from Goole to Doncaster with two men who were discussing how one of them had been banned from traveling on the P&O ferry on the home leg from Rotterdam to Hull, he had then had to walk 15km from the port to a village to get a bus to Schipol Airport and then had to pay over £200 for a ticket to Leeds Bradford Airport.  I was wondered for a while, I wonder why he was banned?  Then his mate said, that was one very expensive cigarette in your cabin and it appeared he had been caught smoking in his cabin and that had been the route of the problem.  That was not all, as then he started to discuss how the doctor had wanted him to go to some sort of centre and he said, “I am not going down that path, anyway it he wants me to go on a Friday and we have bingo on a Friday”.
The other guy then said, “Oh god yeh, bingo is mental on Friday”.
I was thinking, firstly how can bingo get mental and secondly where can I go to get to a bingo that goes mental, all the ones I have been to have seemed quite tame until I am waiting for one number and then my nerves go a bit mental.  Also is it me, but if that number comes out I really forget what I should shout and sort of make a kind of errhhrr noise.
Anyway I arrived at work at 11:30 some 8 minutes late according to Grand Central staff on the train and the reason was that we were following a slow running train, I think he could have checked if all was clear and overtaken but they don’t seem to do that nowadays.
Work was uneventful except for the one walk around St Pancras and Kings Cross that I got mid-afternoon.  The walk to the hotel included the exciting bit where I picked up a free newspaper so that I could do the crossword later when I am in my room.
The other news for this week is that I splashed out a bit and bought myself a pedometer, for those of you panicking it is a gadget that you wear either on your belt or around your neck and it measures how many steps you take each day or until you reset, which for me is daily.  So the results so far:-
Saturday – 4,914
Sunday – 4,422
I have to admit I was shocked how little I have been walking, when I started I thought I will set myself a target of 10,000 steps and thought I might be close.  I know when I work I spend most of my time on my well-padded bum I thought the steps might be difficult but at the weekend when we walk up town and around a few shops I expected more.  So today is a good test, with the walk to the station, my walk around Kings Cross and St Pancras, my walk to the hotel which normal takes around 20 minutes and then if I can get out and about in London I hope I can at least be close.  So we shall see what the results are later.
I am back now from my evening walk and tonight I was on my own as none of my colleagues are about today.  I started off by catching the tube to Covent Garden and having a look around, there was a really good guy playing the guitar and singing.  I had a walk around the stalls and then hot footed it to Leicester Square which was as busy as usual and so a quick once around and it was off toward Trafalgar Square
Once there it was starting to rain and very windy but I managed to get a photo of the coloured fountain and lit up building.

Then it was off down Westminster and to Big Ben where I took the customary photo of the eye and other buildings lit up

.  I was going to proceed across the bridge but the rain was coming down and so I decided to cop out and took the tube back to the hotel.
The pedometer read at the time of return at 10,429 so I managed to knock out 8,000 steps which is not bad for a start of the week and a short walk.  I am hoping I can increase on that tomorrow.
The rest of the night has been spent catching up on my podcasts and a little bit of work but overall a nice relax.

So for now it’s night all
